“I specialize in working with people navigating chronic illness because I’ve lived it myself.”
About:
Sylvia McGuire, LCSW, PMH-C (she/her), helps clients navigate the emotional side of living in a body that doesn't always cooperate. Her own experience with chronic illness informs a therapy style that's grounded and judgment-free, one that doesn't ask clients to minimize or over explain what they're carrying.
Sylvia is an LGBTQIA+ affirming provider who approaches chronic illness as something that affects the whole person, not a symptom list to manage separately from everything else going on. In session, she aims to create space for honesty, rest, and being fully understood, without therapy feeling like just another appointment to get through. For clients who want it, she also offers outdoor sessions around Indianapolis (weather permitting), an alternative to the clinical setting of a typical appointment.
I specialize in working with these populations:
Autoimmune diseases (Lupus, RA, Celiac disease)
GI disorders (IBS, Crohn's, Ulcerative Colitis)
Chronic pain
Chronic fatigue
Dysautonomia
Food allergies
My expertise comes from:
“I specialize in working with people navigating chronic illness because I've lived it myself. I manage chronic conditions, and that firsthand experience is part of how I show up for my clients. I bring a genuine understanding of what it actually takes to get through a day when your body isn't cooperating with your plans.
In addition to my clinical training, I've worked in medical settings that gave me a deeper understanding of chronic illness. I worked as a medical social worker in outpatient GI, pain management, and OB clinics, where I saw firsthand how complex and overwhelming the medical system can be to navigate. I know how much it matters to have someone who truly understands what navigating that system takes. Earlier in my training, I worked as a Child Life Assistant, supporting pediatric patients through medical procedures and difficult diagnoses. That work stayed with me. People need that kind of careful, trauma-informed support at every age, not just in childhood.
That gap is part of why I do this work.”
