“My lived experience informs the way I understand this work, but it does not define anyone else’s experience. I bring that perspective alongside my clinical training so that clients can spend less time explaining the context of their illness and more time exploring what it means for their own life.”
About:
Shannon Schureman, LMHC, works with people navigating chronic illness, invisible disability and neurodivergence, including the complex ways these experiences can overlap. Chronic health conditions, ADHD and autism can add layers to your story that often go unseen or misunderstood, affecting how you relate to your body, your identity and the life you're trying to build. Shannon creates space for all that you are while honoring the unique context these experiences bring.
In the therapy room, you can expect genuine curiosity, careful listening and a humanistic, relationship-centered approach. Shannon wants to understand the details of your experience rather than rush to simplify them. There may be tears, laughter or even both at once. Therapy can be messy, and Shannon believes there should be room for all of it.
I specialize in working with these populations:
Autoimmune disorders: Multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes, Crohn’s disease, autoimmune and inflammatory arthritis, lupus and more
Dysautonomia and connective tissue disorders: POTS, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) and related conditions involving the autonomic nervous system
ME/CFS: ME/CFS and the associated challenges that come with post-exertional malaise, brain fog and fluctuating energy
Neurological conditions: Epilepsy, catamenial epilepsy, unexplained seizure disorders and other neurological conditions
Lyme disease and other complex health conditions: Persistent symptoms following Lyme disease treatment, Long COVID and other complex conditions
Chronic pain and invisible disabilities: Fibromyalgia, migraines, chronic pelvic pain, PCOS, endometriosis and other conditions
People navigating the emotional impact of a new diagnosis, years of uncertainty or symptoms that have been difficult to explain or validate
People figuring out how chronic illness intersects with ADHD or autism
For neurodivergent clients: masking, burnout, executive functioning
My expertise comes from:
“I originally worked in photojournalism, where I learned to pay close attention to people's stories and to notice the details that are easy to overlook. That instinct to look more closely and understand the bigger picture has stayed with me in my clinical work.
In young adulthood, I developed a chronic health condition and spent years struggling with the emotional and practical impact largely on my own. Eventually, I found my way to seeking therapy for the first time. It was deeply helpful, but I also noticed how much of my experience around chronic illness was difficult to explain. That gap stayed with me and eventually became part of what led me to change careers and become a therapist specifically so I could work with people navigating chronic illness.
For years now, I have worked individually with clients navigating chronic illness, medical complexity and neurodivergence. I have pursued additional training in neurodivergent-affirming care and continue to deepen my work through chronic illness-focused consultation and clinical training.”
