About:

Shakira "Kira" O'Garro, LMHC-D, LPCC, LPC, NCC, is a licensed psychotherapist and the founder of Cheerful Heart Mental Health Counseling PLLC, a telehealth practice specializing in faith-affirming therapy for people living with endometriosis, adenomyosis, chronic illness, chronic pain, and medical trauma. She works with adults across New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, California, and Connecticut who are navigating the emotional weight of endometriosis and adenomyosis, autoimmune conditions, and other long-term and invisible illnesses.

Kira understands that a chronic illness diagnosis reshapes far more than the body. Grief over a changing life, medical anxiety, the exhaustion of not being believed, and the strain illness places on identity, work, and relationships are all held and addressed in therapy with her. She helps clients process medical trauma, rebuild a sense of safety in their bodies, and find language for experiences that often go unseen and misunderstood.

As an EMDR-trained therapist, Kira draws on EMDR therapy, Brainspotting, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Prolonged Exposure, and she integrates faith and spirituality for clients who want it woven into their care. Her approach is warm, collaborative, and grounded in the reality that living with a condition like endometriosis is hard enough without having to teach a therapist about what this life is like.

Clients come to Kira for a therapist who truly understands the toll of chronic pelvic pain and chronic illness, from the medical appointments to the grief of losing the pain-free life once hoped for. She offers private-pay telehealth sessions and welcomes those ready to feel more like themselves again.

I specialize in working with these populations:

  • Adenomyosis

  • Cancer

  • Chronic Pelvic Pain

  • Endometriosis

  • Fibroids

  • PMOS

My expertise comes from:

“As an endo sister who lives with severe stage four endometriosis and adenomyosis, I came to this work through my own experience of medical trauma, chronic illness, and chronic pain. Earlier in my career, I also spent about four years supporting people at the end of life who were navigating complex health issues. That work showed me how deeply meaningful I find this work, where I can walk alongside people in their hardest moments.

It helps me to remember, and to show others struggling with these diseases, that nothing is wasted and our pain is not for nothing. We can pave the way for the next person facing endometriosis, adenomyosis, and medical trauma, so they don't have to suffer alone. ”
