“As someone with lived experience with chronic illness and someone who was young when I watched my mom go in and out of the hospital, I somehow am still surprised that I found my way to this work and feel that it happened a bit unexpectedly.”
About:
Natalia Alas Durán, LCSW-S, LICSW, is a Latina therapist who supports adults navigating chronic illness, chronic pain, disability, medical trauma, caregiving, anxiety, and burnout. With over 10 years of experience in medical and community mental health settings working with immigrant, first-generation, and BIPOC communities, she understands how our identities, culture, family roles, and intergenerational experiences shape how we relate to illness, responsibility, and rest.
Her approach is warm, authentic, culturally and identity affirming, and trauma-informed. In therapy, she makes space for grief, anger, fear, exhaustion, and uncertainty without asking you to simply “think positive” or push through. She integrates EMDR, ACT, and somatic approaches while making room for humor, compassionate accountability, and the messy realities of life with chronic illness. As someone with lived experience of chronic illness, Natalia brings both clinical expertise and personal understanding to her work.
I specialize in working with these populations:
Autoimmune diseases
Cancer and survivorship
Celiac disease
Chronic heart diseases
Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome
Endometriosis
Fibromyalgia
Food allergies
Gastrointestinal and digestive conditions
Tinnitus
Traumatic brain injuries
My expertise comes from:
“I have worked in various medical settings throughout the past ten years. During this time, I have taken various EMDR, ACT, Narrative Therapy, and DBT/CBT trainings that are specifically tailored towards supporting individuals with chronic illness and cancer. I also receive ongoing consultation so I can expand on my EMDR skills and use the EMDR for Chronic Pain and Illness Protocol.”
