“I believe chronic illness healthcare has to hold both reality and agency: symptoms may be real, ongoing, and medically complex, while clients can still build more choice, support, pacing, and trust in their bodies. I do not frame illness as a mindset problem.”
About:
Marissa Gilbert is an EMDRIA Certified trauma therapist who works with adults navigating uncertainty, including medical stress, chronic illness, cancer treatment and survivorship, and complex trauma. Her background in integrated behavioral health and emergency room settings informs her appreciation for interdisciplinary care. She uses a paced, capacity-first approach to help clients build stability, access, and trust in their systems before deeper trauma processing.
I specialize in working with these populations:
Adults navigating medical trauma, cancer treatment and survivorship, chronic illness, and the anxiety or shutdown that can come with ongoing health uncertainty
People navigating scan anxiety, fear of recurrence, treatment-related trauma, body mistrust, grief around changes in functioning, and the exhaustion of managing medical systems
Clients whose chronic health stress intersects with complex trauma, high-functioning overwhelm, ADHD/executive overload, or nervous system dysregulation
My expertise comes from:
“My specialty in chronic illness developed through a combination of clinical training, medical system experience, and lived experience. Early in my career, I worked in integrated behavioral health and emergency room settings, where I saw how often emotional distress, trauma, medical uncertainty, and nervous system activation overlap. That experience shaped my belief that it is key for effective healthcare to account for the whole system someone is living inside: medical, relational, emotional, and physiological.
I am also an EMDRIA Certified trauma therapist, and much of my clinical work focuses on paced trauma treatment for people whose bodies are already carrying a high load. My lived experience as a cancer survivor living with chronic illness has deepened my understanding of how destabilizing ongoing medical uncertainty can be, and how important it is for therapy to be supportive without becoming overwhelming. This is why my work is capacity-first: I help clients build enough stability, access, and trust in their system before moving into deeper trauma processing.”
