“Addressing stress, trauma, and nervous system dysregulation can play an important role in reducing symptoms and improving quality of life for people with chronic illness, alongside appropriate medical care.”
— Michelle McKinzie

About:

Michelle McKinzie, LCSW, is a Certified Integrative Mental Health Professional specializing in chronic illness, chronic pain, and trauma. She works with adults navigating Lyme disease, mold illness, MCAS, chronic pain, and other complex health conditions, helping them address the emotional and psychological impact of living with ongoing or unpredictable symptoms.

Michelle has particular expertise in trauma treatment and is a rostered Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) provider. She works with clients navigating both past trauma and experiences related to chronic illness/pain, including medical trauma, loss of health or independence, changes in identity and relationships, uncertainty about the future, and the stress of navigating complex medical systems.

Michelle also brings extensive lived experience to this work. After developing Lyme disease, Babesia, and Bartonella following a tick bite in 2015, she spent several years in treatment before reaching remission. She also has personal experience navigating chronic pain, hypermobility, multiple surgeries, and recovery. These experiences give her a personal understanding of the physical, emotional, and practical complexities of chronic illness/pain, while her work as a therapist remains grounded in evidence-based mental health care.

I specialize in working with these populations:

  • Lyme/Tickborne Illnesses

  • Mold Illness

  • Heavy Metal Toxicity

  • MCAS

  • Chronic Pain

  • Autoimmune Disorders

  • Diabetes

  • hypermobility/EDS

My expertise comes from:

“My interest in chronic illness therapy grew out of my own experiences with chronic pain and Lyme disease. As I navigated my own health challenges, I became increasingly interested in the nervous system, the mind-body connection, and the complex relationship between physical and emotional health. That personal journey ultimately shaped the direction of my clinical work.

In 2023, I became a Certified Integrative Mental Health Professional, with training focused on integrating mental health care with a broader understanding of physical health and wellness. I have also completed continuing education in CBT for chronic pain, polyvagal-informed therapy, and somatic approaches. Because the science surrounding complex chronic illness continues to evolve, ongoing education is an important part of my practice.”
