“I believe chronic illness care should balance coping strategies and nervous system regulation with attention to underlying or related trauma and emotional burdens, helping people take steps toward a life they value and create meaning from difficult circumstances.”
About:
Mark Flanagan, LCSW, is a psychotherapist with 11 years of experience helping adults navigate cancer, chronic illness, grief, anxiety, and life transitions. His background in oncology social work informs his understanding of how illness can affect identity, relationships, and our sense of possibility.
With a background in anthropology, Mark brings curiosity about how culture, community, and personal history shape our lives. He combines compassion, practical strategies, and mind-body approaches to help clients find steadiness, reconnect with their values, and pursue meaningful change. His approach is collaborative, honoring each person’s knowledge of their own life.
Outside his practice, Mark loves gardening and explores the connections between caring for plants, ourselves, and others. He is interested in what living things can teach us through their needs, rhythms, adaptations, and relationships with their surroundings, and how tending a garden can invite patience, connection, and hope.
I specialize in working with these populations:
Cancer
Chronic Pain
Fatigue
Long COVID
Chron’s Disease
Sjögren’s Disease
My expertise comes from:
“My specialty in chronic illness grew out of my work as an oncology social worker. Supporting people through cancer and its treatment showed me how illness can affect relationships, identity, independence, and hopes for the future. I learned the importance of making space for grief, fear, and uncertainty while helping people find connection, meaning, and choice.
My time working at Truly Living Well, an urban farm in Atlanta, also shaped my understanding of care. It deepened my appreciation for the interconnected nature of life, the importance of access to nourishing food, and the connections between caring for ourselves, our communities, and the living world. My training as a yoga teacher further informed my attention to breath, movement, and bodily awareness, with respect for each person’s abilities and limitations.”
