In the United States, a medical emergency often triggers a financial crisis, with medical debt remaining the leading cause of bankruptcy—even among the insured, who make up 78% of those affected. Shockingly, around 85% of these bankruptcies stem from bills under $10,000, highlighting how even a seemingly modest expense can be devastating for families living paycheck to paycheck. Jared Walker, founder of the nonprofit DollarFor, calls this a hidden crisis—but also sees a hidden solution: hospital charity care programs that many Americans qualify for but don’t know exist. DollarFor is working to change that by making access to medical debt relief known, easy, and fair, helping people erase bills they may not even legally need to pay.
