Why This Program Matters for Therapists

Program Content Description:

With 60% of U.S. adults living with chronic conditions and the complex bidirectional relationship between chronic illness and mental health, specialized competency in this area has become a professional imperative. Yet many mental health professionals report feeling unprepared to effectively support this vulnerable population. This program addresses the critical gap between general mental health training and the specialized competencies required for chronic illness practice. Participants examine professional imperatives including prevalence statistics and specific ACA ethical obligations, explore the unique biopsychosocial reality of chronic illness including dynamic disability concepts and energy management theories, and develop practical skills through evidence-based approaches specifically adapted for this population. The program provides coverage of CBT and ACT applications through hands-on exercises, introduces emerging approaches including Somatic Experiencing, Internal Family Systems, Pain Reprocessing Therapy, and clinical hypnosis within appropriate scope of practice frameworks, and develops collaborative care strategies for navigating interdisciplinary healthcare relationships while maintaining ethical boundaries.

"My therapist didn't understand" - a common refrain from chronically ill clients seeking mental health support.

Learning Objectives

After completing the program, participants will be able to...

  1. Analyze professional imperatives and ethical obligations for developing competency in chronic illness mental health practice, including statistical data, ACA ethical applications, and scope of practice boundaries (Professional Orientation and Ethics)

  2. Apply evidence-based therapeutic approaches (CBT and ACT) specifically adapted for chronic illness populations, including hands-on tool development and treatment selection criteria (Helping Relationships)

  3. Evaluate emerging therapeutic approaches (Somatic Experiencing, IFS, PRT, Clinical Hypnosis) for chronic illness presentations while navigating complex ethical dilemmas and maintaining scope of practice boundaries (Professional Orientation and Ethics)

  4. Implement collaborative care strategies with healthcare providers including communication protocols, role clarification, and client self-advocacy training while upholding ethical standards (Professional Orientation and Ethics)

  5. Apply cultural humility and recognize developmental considerations when working with chronically ill clients from diverse backgrounds, including intersectionality, dynamic disability concepts, and lifespan transitions (Social and Cultural Diversity, Human Growth and Development)

  6. Develop personal competency plans for ongoing professional development in chronic illness practice, including self-care strategies, boundary maintenance, and referral network building (Professional Orientation and Ethics)
